Girls Getaway: 4-Day Itinerary for Oaxaca
I finally understand why people light up when they talk about this special city. I’ve heard a million good reasons, and I decided to it was time to experience it all firsthand.
We packed our bags and flew into Oaxaca City , ready to discover all that this charming destination had to offer.
Day 1
Consider grabbing a quick pastry from Boulenc or brace the brunch line.
We walked around centro and stopped by local shops and admired all the Dia De Los Muertos decorations that went up. Tourists and locals alike, stopped by to snap photos of the larger-than-life skull sculptures. Streets were crowded with people who were ready to celebrate!
For dinner, we treated ourselves to a 9-course tasting menu from El Destilado. Each dish was more jaw-dropping than the next, with flavors that were complex and unfamiliar to my tastebuds. Here’s a look at a few of my favorite dishes from the night.
Day 2
We were lucky to walk into Los Danzantes with no reservation, the space + food are absolutely incredible. The restaurant itself is strikingly beautiful, made of natural materials that make you feel captivated and welcomed into the space. The experience from start to finish was amazing.
After indulging in lunch, stroll around for coffee, chocolates, ceramics, or mezcal, all staple souvenirs in the city of Oaxaca. The best spots for ceramics are La Chicharra Ceramica, Colectivo 1050, and Marias Arte & Diseño.
Rest up before the mezcal starts flowing and head to a delicious dinner at Casa Taviche. We opted for a late night drink at La Mezcalerita, a wonderful rooftop spot to people watch from above and sip on mezcal shots.
Day 3
It was a bright and early morning as we visited the historical Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca. Arrive early or be prepared to wait, they only let in groups of fifteen in every hour. English tours are available on Tuesday, so plan accordingly! *Subject to change during COVID
Don’t forget to book in advance to enjoy the remarkable views from Pitonia, It’s Mexican-European flare definitely makes for a stand-out experience, the space evokes pure relaxation and serenity. Now onto the food…well, I’ll let it speak for itself.
For dinner, we walked-in to my favorite restaurant right now, Criollo. This place comes highly recommended and I know why… Chef Luis Arellano highlights the best seasonal and local ingredients making nods to different Oaxacan techniques. Truly a must-visit if you’re heading to Oaxaca.
Day 4
Our last morning here would not be complete without a quick breakfast stop at…yep you guessed it.. Criollo. If I love something, I just have to have it all the time. While the breakfast menu is reasonably paired down, the morning light peering through the restaurant was absolutely beautiful. We couldn’t leave without one last meal at this gorgeous oasis.
